The 20’s were marked by Prohibition in the US, which meant big business for the folks on the wrong side of the law. Not to mention those who found themselves on both sides. The HBO series Boardwalk Empire centers around Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, Treasurer of Atlantic County and bootlegging kingpin. He’s a complex character, equal parts hardnosed and heartwarming, and perpetually unsatisfied.
