You’re listening to Nina Simone, the high priestess of soul.

You’re on the Sound Beat.

This song forbidden fruit is from the same titled album, released by Colpix in 1961. While it features the “call and response” found in styles such as gospel, jazz and the blues, Simone didn’t like to fit to define her music in that way.

“Jazz is a white term to define black people. My music is black classical music.”

Simone’s love for the music of Bach inspired her to become a classical pianist at a young age. We’re glad she made the switch.
