The Music Goes Round and Round

Episode Air Date: May 24, 2018
Artist: Mae Questel
Recording Title: The Music Goes Round And Round

Here she is with “The Music Goes Round And Round”, a Decca recording from 1936.

So by now you’ve probably placed Mae as the voice of Betty Boop, but she also voiced Popeye’s leading lady Olive Oyl as well as their baby Sweetpea. She even filled in for the “Sailor Man” himself when his regular voice, Jack Mercer , served in World War II.

Betty Boop certainly hasn’t gone anywhere, but a younger generation may be familiar with Mae’s role in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Click here for “THE BLESSING!”

Who in their right mind would call Chevy Chase a “comedy icon”? As Johnny Carson said, “He couldn’t ad lib a fart after a bake bean party”, whatever a “bake bean party” is.

I called him a comedy icon. The (first 3) National Lampoon Vacation movies, Caddyshack, Fletch, Three Amigos, Spies Like Us, and a handful of Emmys for SNL acting and writing? Quite a resume. He may not be an improviser, and he might not be a very nice guy, but comedy icon holds true in my mind.
