Patsy Montana helped to pave the way for the women of country music that followed.
In 1935, Montana wrote and recorded her biggest hit: “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart.” It made her the first woman ever to sell a million copies of a country music record. The song also made yodeler Rosalie Allen famous. Here she is from 1946.
The song has also been recorded by Phish, the Dixie Chicks, LeAnn Rimes, and others. Patsy Montana is in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
